Derek was born December 1st, 2013. His parents did not know he would have any health problems when he was born. During ultra-sound some "noise" was heard in his heart but nothing was ever mentioned again about it. As a result, they were expecting a happy, healthy baby boy. When he was born, his mother noticed that he was blue in color. When she asked the doctor about it, she was told he was fine, that it was normal. Having had two children prior, she knew something wasn't right. During his newborn screening, a murmur was heard in his heart. Again his parents were told not to worry, that it was more than likely the PDA, or hole all babies are born with in thier hearts and usually close up on thier own after birth or as long as 72 hours later. An EKG was done to be sure however. The doctor did not seem concerned, agian saying it was just the normal hole in his heart that all babies are born with and that it would close up on its own.
They were sent home to follow up with thier pediatrician for a normal well baby check up. The pediatrician did not like the results the hosptial doctors gave the family and so they were refered to a pediatric cardiologist. Two months later they were able to see the cardiologist. Derek was then diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot. He will have open heart surgery to repair his heart on March 10th, 2014.
Derek's family needs your support with Derek's medical bills. His mother is legally blind and his father is currently seeking employment, but with his son's impending surgery that search has been put on hold. If you would like to help, click the link below to make a donation.
